Elizabeth’s hair extensions are very simple to look after, and in many ways you can treat them as you would your own real hair.

However, it is important that the home care guidelines are followed correctly in order for the hair extensions to sustain their longevity, to keep them in their best condition, and to prevent damage to your natural hair.

General

Elizabeth generally doesn’t recommend colouring, tinting or perming the extension hair even though these procedures can be carried out. These types of procedures contain elements that can damage the extension hair just like they would or can your natural hair. Even though our extensions are 100% human hair, it is not receiving nutrients from the scalp like your own natural hair. The more heat and chemicals you use on the hair extension the shorter the life span of the hair.

Treat your extensions with the same respect as you would with you own natural hair. Superior aftercare and regular maintenance will keep your hair feeling and looking great for longer.

It is important to brush your hair extensions and separate the bonds 2-3 times a day.

Never wear your extensions for longer than 3 months. In the 3 months of wearing your extensions your hair will have grown by approx 1.5 inches, the roots of your hair often start to tangle together if you have not separated the bonds correctly and therefore it is not healthy for the hair if left.

Washing

Before washing it is advised to detangle your extension hair with your hair extension tangle teaser brush which will glide through your hair with no pulling, tugging or yanking. Dirt and sweat build up may cause tangling, properly washing your hair is absolutely necessary. On washing do not tip your hair over the bath keep your head up right.

Do not apply excessive amounts of water to the hair at any one time, this will cause the hair to swell and tangle, apply water gradually until the hair is fully wet.

Apply Shampoo starting at the roots and gradually work your way down to the ends, rinse thoroughly and apply conditioner starting at the mid-shaft of the hair to the ends, DO NOT lather the hair in big sweeping motions as this can cause tangling and slippage, wash the hair by gently combing through with your fingers, DO NOT let conditioner touch the roots of the hair as this could also encourage slippage. Professional deep moisturising shampoos and conditioners are recommended to be used on the hair, it must be a silicon and sulphate free range from the Professional Brands. Elizabeth recommends Redken, Pureology or Jpico kpak. The only high street range would be Loreal Everpure.

If you are wearing or have purchased bodywave hair it needs to be washed and styled as though your hair is permed, a diffuser is recommended to be used on blowdrying, with the use of curl hold products on styling, a tip is to wind the hair around your finger on blowdrying to keep the wave in tact.

Drying

Before detangling we advise you to use a leave in conditioning spray on every wash. Follow by detangling with a wide tooth comb, making sure you avoid the bonds. Make sure all bonds are dried completely. Be very careful when brushing the hair when wet, make sure you support the extensions hair by holding the bond, remove excess by grabbing the roots and squeezing down the ends.

Heated Rollers, Straightening Irons, crimpers and tongs can all be used on the extension hair although it is advisable to use a Heat Protection Spray to protect the both your hair and the extension hair. Gels & hairsprays etc may all be used but avoid the bonded areas as this may cause slippage.

Brushing

Remember your extensions are attached to your own natural hair, pulling too hard or mistreating your extensions can result in your own hair being pulled out. The only brushes you should use near to your extension bonds is an extension brush – this brush has soft loop bristles and a cushioned bristle base, or your tangle teaser brush which will be given to you on your first appointment. When brushing the extensions always hold the bonds, making sure no additional stress is put on the hair.

Swimming & Holidays

We do not recommend that you swim with your extensions, however if you do, we advise you take the following precautions Avoid getting extension hair wet when swimming. Keep your head above the water, do not swim under water and no diving.

A professional Heat protector spray should be used throughout the day whilst in the sun, being hot and sweating on the nape of the neck can also cause the extensions to matt if you don’t keep them separated, this is more likely to occur with the highly processed blondes that are supplied.

The chlorine in pools and salt in the sea combined with heat can cause the extension hair to discolour and matt. Chlorine, pool chemicals and salt will cause the keratin bonds to break down and disintegrate which will result in the loss of the extension hair if the pre-bonded or lock system.

Do not sleep with wet hair extensions; ensure they are dry before you head for bed.

Elizabeth would personally advise any client to wait until after their holidays to have a new set of hair applied to achieve the longevity.

The Importance of Good Aftercare

Bad haircare products and improper maintenance is the most common reason why hair extensions don’t last.

Hair extensions are a great way to change your look but they do require some maintenance and care. Once you have had your extensions fitted. Hair extensions often cost a lot of money and can take a while to adapt to, so it is in your interest to look after them properly.

It is perfectly normal to lose some bonds when brushing

It is advisable to have an aftercare appointment a week or so after you’ve had your extensions fitted to make sure everything is going well. If you need any bonds removed or replaced then this is the time to do it.

How Long Do will they Last?

Elizabeth’s uses only the finest healthiest hair, hand-picked virgin backgrounds,  which has not been treated with harsh chemicals and all the cuticles in each strand are aligned in the same direction, hair will last clients 9-12 months with maintenance which means you will get up to 3 applications out of the hair.

Every client is different and therefore, some people’s hair extensions will last longer than others depending on their natural hair type. After this period they will need to be replaced. If you wish, you can have your hair extensions removed and reapplied on the same day, ensuring that your hair continues to look its best.

In order to keep hair in perfect condition Elizabeth advices the hair extensions are worn no longer than 3 months between maintenance appointments. It is very important that hair extensions are not worn for longer than 3 months before having them re-applied.

Due to your hair’s natural life cycle, it is normal to loose up to 100 hairs a day as part of this natural process. When wearing hair extensions the shed hair remains trapped within the bond, and over time it will start to build up at the roots.

This can cause matting at the root area if the ex-tensions are worn for too long. Also, as your natural hair continues to shed, the extensions will be secured by fewer strands of your real hair, producing an imbalance of weight and subsequently causing excessive strain on the natural hair.

Therefore, if you leave it too long before having your hair extensions reapplied, you run the risk of damaging your own hair. Additionally, since the ex-tensions grow with your own hair, after 3 months the bonds will have grown down significantly, and can become visible and can also start getting caught during brushing and styling.

During maintenance appointments Elizabeth will reapply any extensions that may have slid out, and replace any loose bonds. She can also apply a ‘top up’ of hair, to fill out any areas if needed.

It is normal to experience a small amount of shedding and to lose a hair extension from time to time, but so long as the home care guidelines are adhered to this should be kept to a minimum.

Finally all brands of extensions are different and do require different aftercare, Elizabeth wants you to love and enjoy your extensions and new look, following the above aftercare will ensure this will happen.
